Your trucks feed California. Your auto premium shouldn't eat your margin.
Box trucks, reefers and tractors running early-morning routes into tight docks and busy streets. That's one of the hardest fleets to insure in the state. We place food distributors with carriers that want your class and give credit for how well you run it.
- Built for 1 to 50 power units
- Reefer breakdown and spoilage cover
- Credit for dashcams, telematics and safety programs
- High liability limits and umbrella options
- Workers' comp and GL under one roof

Takes about 2 minutes. We'll follow up for your vehicle list and loss runs.
Got it. Your fleet is in line.
Someone from our commercial lines team will reach out on the next business day. To speed things up, have these ready: your vehicle list with VINs, your driver list, and 3–5 years of loss runs.
Why food distribution fleets cost more to insure
Underwriters look at a food distributor and see constant exposure: lots of stops, lots of miles and perishable cargo. Here's what drives your price, and what you can do about it.
Stop-and-go routes
Dozens of stops a day, double-parking, alleys and backing into tight docks. Most fleet claims are low-speed, but they add up fast.
Reefer breakdown
A failed reefer unit on a hot day can spoil a full load. Standard cargo forms often exclude it unless reefer breakdown is added.
Large jury verdicts
Truck accident verdicts keep climbing, which pushes carriers to raise rates or cut limits. The right limits and umbrella protect the business.
Driver turnover
New and younger drivers, and MVRs with recent violations, are the biggest single rating factor on most fleets.
Early hours
Pre-dawn starts, fatigue and long days on the road raise accident frequency.
Fewer markets
Many standard carriers have pulled back from trucking. Without a broker who knows who's writing, you take whatever your renewal says.
What moves your premium
Every carrier rates a little differently. These are the factors we see make the biggest difference for food distributors.
Clean records and drivers with 2+ years of commercial experience get the best rates.
Frequency matters as much as size. A string of small backing claims hurts.
Tractors and heavy box trucks rate higher than vans and light trucks.
Local metro routes rate differently from long regional runs.
Dashcams, GPS, driver training and written hiring standards can earn credits with the right carrier.

Who we take you to
We're an independent broker, not a captive agent. That means we shop your fleet with:
Admitted carriers
A-rated standard markets that write California food distribution and delivery fleets, for well-run accounts with solid loss history.
Specialty transportation markets
Carriers that focus on trucking and understand reefers, dock exposure and multi-stop routes.
E&S and alternative programs
For tougher risks: newer ventures, younger drivers or a bad loss year. Plus group captive options for larger, safer fleets.

Common questions
We just got a big renewal increase. Is it too late to shop?
Not usually. 60 to 90 days before renewal is ideal, but we can often move faster if your loss runs and vehicle list are ready.
Do you only write food distributors?
No, but it's a class we know well. We also place fleets for wholesalers, produce haulers, beverage and restaurant supply companies.
We had a bad claim year. Can you still help?
Yes. We work with specialty and E&S markets that look at what changed, such as new drivers, cameras or training, not just the numbers.
What size fleet is the best fit?
California-based fleets with about 1 to 50 power units. If you're larger, call us. Captive programs may be a fit.
Can you also quote workers' comp and GL?
Yes, and it often helps. Some carriers credit accounts that place auto, comp and liability together.
Renewal in the next 90 days?
That's the window to shop your fleet. Send us the basics now and see where your premium is really going before you sign another year.
